Music and History

links from episodes about Boston music and its history

When we began Above The Basement, we soon discovered there were many untold stories of Boston: the amazing music and unknown but potentially legendary tales that came out of the now defunct Rathskellar in Kenmore Square; the history of the Wang/Boch Center – formerly the Boston Music Hall – that was once the epicenter for Americana and Folk music; and the long string of musicians like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Elvin Bishop and Joni Mitchell who came through Boston and made this city a music destination.

Many stories long hidden or forgotten could be lost if left untold.

Our goal is to create a new Music and History series at Above The Basement that will explore the rich history of Boston music, which exists in only in a few books and rare documentaries. We will talk with the people who were there in the trenches - the musicians, club owners and producers, the fans and others who followed the musical goings on - and record their first-hand perspectives. With a mix of music, personal recollections and archived recordings as well as the historical context of what was happening in the City of Boston, we will capture these stories before they are gone forever.
